Bidco Africa can deal directly with individual small scale farmers but given the size of their enterprises, we advise farmers to form farmers’ groups or cooperatives to benefit from economies of scale.

The Bidco agribusiness team will then advise the recommended farmers on suitable crop and varieties for their Agro Ecological Zones. In addition, the farmers are recommended to do soil analysis for their areas of production to have a clear knowledge of the levels of nutrients on their farms. The soil analysis results will be the basis of fertilizer recommendation.

Bidco Africa will then enter into an off-take contract with the potential farmers. The contract will clearly indicate the farm location, contacts, farm size, crop, varieties, and the quality standards required. The farmer will sign the contract committing himself/herself to grow and supply the oilseeds to Bidco. Bidco will endorse the contract committing itself to offer ready market.

Bidco extension officers will advise the farmers to ensure Good Agricultural Practices are adhered to by the farmer. In addition, the extension officers will also visit the farmers from time to time based on need. It is the farmer’s responsibility to till the land and buy the required farm inputs (fertilizers, seeds, insecticides). Bidco does not give farmers inputs or guarantee credit to acquire farm inputs.

The harvested and dried oilseeds are delivered by the farmer to Bidco’s oilseed crushing facility, the Elianto factory in Nakuru. At Elianto, the produce is sampled to ensure that it conforms to the required standards (Specs will be mentioned in the contract) in terms of moisture content and percentage of impurities. If the oilseeds meet the required conditions, the produce is weighed and the weight used to compute the farmer’s payment.
