2 min readThis exposure visit will be held on 3rd September 2016 and will expose the farmers to the following:
Theme: Leveraging on organic farming for healthy living
Herbs enterprise
The farm boasts of over five main herb varieties; Thyme (common, orange & lemon) Mint (Peppermint & spearmint) Oregano, Stevia, Chia Seed and Flax seed. Herbs are currently making a new entry into the market and have been known for various home therapies. With the many lifestyle diseases mushrooming, organically grown herbs are definitely they way to go. Did you know some communities in Kenya survive on herbs for all their health remedies? You’ll be taken through the whole production stages till packaging and be taught on market linkages.
Fruits enterprise
Pepino melon
Have you heard of the Pepino Melon? It’s a fruit originating from South America that is championed for it’s health benefits. Eaten with its skin, it has a sweet taste that I personally likened it to a cantaloupe or a thorn melon. Has several benefits; It helps with liver disease, lowers blood pressure, helps those that suffer from strokes to heal faster, and promotes cardiovascular health. Armed with these, the organic Pepino Melon is the sure way to go.
Strawberries
Not all strawberries out there are the same. There are those synthetically grown and those organically grown. The problem with synthetically grown food is that it may be aiding in the promotion of the disease you’re trying to cure. You will be taught on strawberry crop management from production stage to processing.
Vermiculture enterprise:
A critical section if you are planning to do organic farming is the vermiculture. Worm farming. They use the compost manure from this section to produce all their herbs and fruits. You’ll learn more on when to prepare this compost manure and the use if worm tea as a pesticide.
Rabbit enterprise:
The farm boasts of over 180 rabbits that are used in urine production of fertilizer. In depth training on preparation of the rabbit urine fertilizer will be given and the proper spraying method.
